UI Mockup Artist (Product Team)
OwnerRez is seeking someone to help our product team create mockups and UI layouts - an artist who has considerable experience in HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap. Oh, by the way - you can live anywhere (within USA timezones) and we have great benefits.
This position has been filled, but you can check our careers page for any currently open positions.
Responsibilities and Duties
We're a small, agile-ish team -- we follow no specific methodology but focus on short iterations and continuous improvement. As a virtual company, all OwnerRez employees work from home, which can be anywhere with a reliable Internet connection and a good working environment.
What we need now:
- As a mockup artist with a product design focus, you will be responsible for laying out product designs - from web UI to backend internal areas - and contributing to our team's adoption of best design practices as a key member of our cross-functional product and dev teams.
- You will not be responsible for creating the design, but you will be required to take existing design decisions (based on already-created app patterns) and produce mockups in Bootstrap for developers and testers to work against. We are not looking for a design chief or UX creator. We are looking for someone to work with the designs we have already created and produce "live drawings" in Bootstrap based on that. This will help testers and developers visualize requirements and know what to expect.
- You will attend daily and weekly meetings with the product team to stay current with your tasks, discuss obstacles, and be aware of the overall state of the product and engineering teams.
In the future:
Our product includes a website builder that thousands of our customers use to run their businesses and show their brands. We want to expand this product with more templates and better menu/page theming. The Mockup Artist role may evolve to include work in this area, creating or copying themes for our product team to offer to customers.
Our product sends millions of emails both to our customers as "alerts" and to their customers as "messages." The design of those emails will evolve over time. The alerts may need design work, and the messages may need themes for customers to adopt for their business.
As time progresses, if your work is exemplary, this position may evolve into full-scale product design (i.e., design chief, UX creator) and not just mockup work.

Will I fit in well? Yes, if…
- You're highly skilled in HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap, and love doing mockups that bring product ideas to life. You genuinely enjoy getting up every day and working in markup and stylesheet languages, and you look forward to presenting fresh content, whether new features or renovated old stuff.
- You fully understand and appreciate mobile-first design principles and have experience drawing layouts that are responsive to multiple screen sizes (mobile, tablet, desktop)
- You are able to do pixel-perfect renderings, obsess over details, and think through the implications of the design you create -- does it accomplish the job now, but also will it be maintainable later, will 2 years from now you be able to figure out what you did previously, and will it continue to perform as we grow and experience more users and more data.
- You like maintaining consistent components and reusing the same patterns across the app.
- It bothers you when parts of the app look one way, but other areas look "behind" or "not caught up" to the latest design.
- You've used online editors like JS Fiddle to create quick examples or share ideas with friends or colleagues.
- You have a working knowledge of web technologies from a low level to a high level. You don't need to know every last bit and byte of an encoding scheme, but you should be able to describe what happens when a browser makes a request and the different protocols and formats used.
- You're good at meeting deadlines and being proactive. Typically, team members don't have to wait for you to finish things.
- You want to improve your skills and work within a tight-knit team, but you're not distracted by the latest shiny new HTML or Javascript framework. We believe in the Majestic Monolith and Choosing Boring Technology. We like checking out the new hotness as much as any other group of tech nerds, but factor in risk and complexity when choosing which technologies to use.
- You love doing things efficiently. The whole purpose of OwnerRez is to have a massive efficiency impact on our clients' businesses, and we want our internal operations to be the same. We believe in systems and processes that let us scale our impact to be larger than ourselves. If something is manual and repetitive, something needs to be done to change that, which means communication is essential.
- You love to set your own course. At OwnerRez, we keep meetings to a minimum because we need to spend our time making things happen. Most of the time, you get to make things happen yourself without someone saying so.
- You are located within a USA timezone (or nearby), and are online during core business hours of 9am - 2pm Eastern (UTC-5) and 3pm on Thursdays.
Compensation
- $80 - 95k, pay commensurate with experience
- Fully paid health benefits
- Unlimited PTO policy, subject to team schedule and needs
- 100% telework-from-home
- Travel rare if ever, may do annual get-togethers
